5 Common BMW Check Engine Light Triggers

Seeing the check engine light illuminate on your BMW’s dashboard can be unsettling. While it’s easy to ignore, this warning light is a common sign that something isn’t right under the hood. Ignoring it can lead to more expensive issues, so it’s best to visit the shop for diagnostics. At Munich Auto, we provide expert BMW check engine light diagnostics and repair in the greater Austin, TX area. Here are five common triggers for the check engine light in a BMW.
Faulty Oxygen Sensor
Oxygen sensors monitor the amount of unburned oxygen in your BMW's exhaust system, helping the engine control its fuel-to-air ratio. If an oxygen sensor malfunctions, the car may run less efficiently, leading to lower gas mileage and increased emissions.
Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter
Your BMW's catalytic converter is responsible for converting harmful gasses from the engine's exhaust into less harmful emissions. If it malfunctions, your vehicle could experience reduced performance. A failing catalytic converter can cause the check engine light to come on and can also result in poor fuel-efficiency.
Bad Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils
Spark plugs and ignition coils work together to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the engine’s cylinders. If either component starts to fail, you may experience engine misfires, rough idling, or poor acceleration, which can trigger the check engine light.
Mass Airflow Sensor Issues
The mass airflow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine and helps the engine control the air/fuel mixture for optimal performance. When the MAF sensor malfunctions, it can cause poor engine performance, rough idling, or stalling. A faulty MAF sensor will trigger the check engine light and should be addressed ASAP.
Loose, Missing, or Damaged Gas Cap
It might sound strange, but a common reason for an illuminated check engine light is a loose or damaged gas cap. The gas cap seals your fuel system. If it isn’t properly tightened, fuel may evaporate before your engine gets the chance to use it.
